Promoting internationality and multiculturalism as part of the activities of Alava School

Alava School has been granted Erasmus accreditation for 2023-2027. Accreditation is a new way of carrying out international activities on a long-term basis and developing language and cultural awareness among pupils and staff. Our school’s objectives for accreditation are:

1.

Successful inclusion in practice

Let’s get acquainted with different ways to implement inclusion. We implement the inclusion of our own students through pupil mobility. We present our own country’s way of implementing inclusion in our various international meetings.

2.

Utilising digitalisation to increase inclusion

Use digital means of communicating with our international colleagues, and our presentations are in digital format. We add our own and others’ awareness of the different instruments and programs that can support children with special needs. We are actively looking for good ideas for new technology renewals.

3.

On the way to becoming an international expert

We are looking for new ways to reduce school attendance and anxiety, as well as school arrangements for students with autism disorder. We create networks of experts and we join the ones that already exist. We get acquainted with the latest international studies.

4.

Sharing our expertise

We present our multidisciplinary work models, a hybrid model for out-of-school pupils, a family classroom model, and our various programs that support student well-being (Art, Friends, Nepsy).

Accreditation makes it possible to organize annual visits abroad for staff and pupils. Visits can be to partner schools or training courses for staff or job shadowing activities. Our goal is to develop our school’s international operations into a long-term and we want them to become a permanent part of our school’s operating culture.

Three of our teachers participated in Special
needs and inclusive education course held in Iceland (August 2023). Teachers around Europe got to learn about different inclusive school systems together in a very inspiring environment.

Job shadowing-trip at Czech Republic, where we visited at two different special education shools. We learned a lot about technology in special education and different teaching methods with autistic students. The trip strengthened our knowledge a lot about digital teaching environments and different teaching methods in special education. We plan to continue our co-operation.

Our teachers Ritva and Kirsi on a Job shadowing-trip to Greece 8-12.4.2024.

Trip with students to Eindhoven and Amsterdam.

Our headmaster Merja Laininen ja special education teacher Krista Tarkiainen visited two days job shadowing in Stockholm. They visited these three places: Sankt Görans sjukhus skolan, Stockholm center for eating disoder and Panorama skolan.
